While flood waters are restricting access to some parts of the refuge, the area around the Visitor Center is welcoming. The Butterfly Garden Walk on Saturday was full of beautiful blooms and bugs. The docents counted 22 species of butterflies, with some special finds. Mourning Cloaks were seen for the first time ever in the garden. Many Emperors, Buckeyes, and Fritillaries were nectaring on the Common Milkweed flowers. Great Purple Hairstreaks and Soapberry Hairstreaks made their first appearance of the season. Queens and Monarchs flew through and at least one was seen leaving an egg on a Milkweed leaf. Photos are American Lady, Monarch, Mourning Cloak, and Soapberry Hairstreak. The next Butterfly Garden Walk is planned for May 25, 2024. More information about Butterfly Garden Walks.
