The Refuge HQ and Visitor Center are closed due to the federal government shutdown. All scheduled events are postponed until the government re-opens. Refuge roads, trails, lands and outdoor restrooms remain open to the public at this time.
Big Game Hunt Public Safety Notice Hunting activity associated with the Big Game Hunt will be occurring at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge from Nov 07-09, Nov 21-23, Dec 05-07. Visitors are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings, wear visible clothing, and follow all posted safety signs and guidance while on the refuge. Refuge staff appreciate your cooperation in ensuring a safe experience for hunters and visitors alike. Meyers Branch, Harris Creek and Big Mineral Units will be affected by the deer hunts.

Join us for a Butterfly Garden Walk Scheduled in May through October |
Enjoy the large, 1/4 acre Butterfly Garden at Hagerman NWR with garden docents on hand to help you identify the Texas native plants and the butterflies in the garden. Special activities for families including scavenger hunts and the Metamorphosis Puppet. The garden is free of charge and open to the public from sunrise to sunset every day of the year; garden walk events are scheduled periodically from May through October. Come alone or bring the family. In the fall, the garden walks may include Monarch Tagging, where the kids get to see the monarchs close up and some may get a chance to let it touch them before it takes off. Check back in September/October for this opportunity. New volunteer garden docents are always welcome and training is provided: simply attend a scheduled Butterfly Docent Meeting, or Contact Us for more information.
