On national wildlife refuges, wildlife comes first. The establishment purpose of the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge is to provide and manage habitat for migratory birds, wildlife, and plants native to this area, and to provide opportunity for outdoor recreation that is compatible. The refuge offers wildlife-dependent recreational opportunities, including wildlife observation and photography, fishing, hunting, and hiking, and educational programs.
Our Mission: Friends of Hagerman NWR Foundation is a 501(c)(3) corporation whose mission is to instill reverence, respect and conservation of our wild creatures and habitats through supporting environmental education, recreational activities, and programs of Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
With this mission in mind, the Friends work together with refuge staff to host educational programs for individuals, church and school groups, and scouts as well as monthly nature programs for adults. They offer recreational tram tours of the refuge while educating participants about the history and purpose of the refuge and the wildlife they see along the way. They hold guided bird walks and butterfly walks to educate the public about these incredible creatures and the importance of environmental conservation for their survival. The Friends also help develop and distribute educational handouts for every visitor. More About the Friends of Hagerman NWR
The Friends of Hagerman Nature Nook offers field guides, books and other nature related items for sale, to enhance visitors' enjoyment of the Refuge and encourage further study about nature-related topics. The shop is managed and staffed by volunteers, with proceeds going to fund Friends' projects at the Refuge.
In 2013 the Friends of Hagerman received the very first Southwest Region Friends of the Year Award, given by the US Fish & Wildlife Service Southwest Region. In 2018 they were awarded the honor a second time.

Meetings of the Board of Directors are held at the Refuge once every month except December.
Annual meetings of the general membership of the Friends of Hagerman NWR are normally held at the Refuge in March, though the 2020 and 2021 meetings were held virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions. The agenda for the annual meeting includes annual reports, a state of the Refuge report, and election of Directors.
